Westdale Schools: Rankings, Catchments, and What Families Need to Know
By Chris Ouzas, Broker, Michael Ouzas Real Estate Team, Royal LePage Signature Realty. Last updated July 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Westdale's public pathway is split by grade: Cootes Paradise for JK to Grade 5, Dalewood for Grades 6 to 8, then Westdale Secondary for Grades 9 to 12.
- Westdale Secondary is one of only two HWDSB schools running the International Baccalaureate program, and one of only two running secondary French Immersion. It rated 6.7 out of 10 in the Fraser Institute's 2025 Report Card, 275th of 747 ranked Ontario secondary schools.
- The Catholic option is Canadian Martyrs Catholic Elementary, a small JK to 8 school that feeds St. Mary Catholic Secondary, with Cathedral High School as the French Immersion route.
- Run the exact address through HWDSB's Find My School page and HWCDSB's School Locator and Boundaries page before you buy. Both are free.
Westdale is the neighbourhood buyers name first when schools are the reason they are moving to Hamilton. It sits beside McMaster University and McMaster Children's Hospital, and it feeds a high school with a reputation well beyond the west end. That reputation affects pricing, so it is worth checking what the schools are.
Westdale is served by a handful of schools, each covering a narrow band of grades, and the program families most often want, French Immersion, is boundaried separately from the English program. Below is each one, with numbers traceable to the Ontario Ministry of Education's School Information Finder or the Fraser Institute, and a plain note where nothing is published.
Cootes Paradise Elementary School (JK-5)
Cootes Paradise sits at 900 King Street West, backing onto the marsh it is named for. The School Information Finder lists it at JK to Grade 5 with a preliminary 2024-25 enrolment of about 565, large for a primary school. The ministry record still uses the older legal name, Cootes Paradise Public School.
It is the Grade 1 to 5 French Immersion site for HWDSB's Westdale Secondary cluster. It also runs a Mandarin Language Transition Program, which is widely misread: the school describes it as open to JK to Grade 5 students whose first language is Mandarin, using Mandarin as a support while they build English so they can move into mainstream English programming by Grade 6. It is not an immersion stream open to every family.
Cootes Paradise is not among the 3,047 schools rated in the Fraser Institute's 2025 Report Card on Ontario's Elementary Schools. EQAO is published: in 2024-25, 81 per cent of its Grade 3 students met the provincial standard in reading against 74 per cent province wide, and 60 per cent in math against 64 per cent.
Dalewood Elementary School (Grades 6-8)
Dalewood, at 1150 Main Street West, is where most Westdale public school students go for Grades 6, 7, and 8. The ministry lists it at Grades 6 to 8 with a preliminary 2024-25 enrolment of about 290, under its older name, Dalewood Senior Public School. It carries French Immersion too, so the immersion pathway runs Cootes Paradise, then Dalewood, then Westdale Secondary.
Dalewood is not rated in the Fraser Institute's 2025 report either. Its 2024-25 EQAO Grade 6 results sit below the provincial figures: 79 per cent meeting the standard in reading against 86 per cent, and 43 per cent in math against 51 per cent.
One thing that trips up online searches: HWDSB no longer has a school called Ryerson. It was renamed Kanétskare Elementary School in 2022, a Grade 6 to 8 school at 222 Robinson Street, which is not Westdale.
Canadian Martyrs Catholic Elementary School (JK-8)
Canadian Martyrs is the Catholic board's school in the neighbourhood, at 1355 Main Street West beside the church of the same name. The ministry lists it at JK to Grade 8 with a preliminary 2024-25 enrolment of about 185.
The published numbers point in different directions, so here are both. In the Fraser Institute's 2025 Report Card, built on 2023-24 results, Canadian Martyrs rated 3.2 out of 10 and ranked 2,830th of 3,047 schools. In the 2024-25 EQAO data, 100 per cent of its Grade 6 students met the provincial standard in reading and in writing, against 86 and 85 per cent province wide, with math at 57 per cent against 51 per cent. Grade 3 was softer. With roughly 185 students in the whole school, one cohort moves the average hard. Treat a single year of results with caution and look at the trend over several years.
Secondary Schools Serving Westdale (Grades 9-12)
Westdale Secondary School, at 700 Main Street West, has a preliminary 2024-25 enrolment of about 1,525. It rated 6.7 out of 10 in the Fraser Institute's 2025 Report Card on Ontario's Secondary Schools, 275th of the 747 ranked schools in that report. On 2024-25 EQAO, 88 per cent of its Grade 10 students passed the literacy test on the first attempt against 85 per cent province wide.
Two programs explain most of the pull. HWDSB runs the International Baccalaureate diploma, a Grade 11 and 12 stream, at only two sites: Ancaster High and Westdale. It runs secondary French Immersion at only two: Sherwood and Westdale. Neither is automatic. The board states students apply to their IB school based on catchment boundaries, and IB boundaries are drawn separately from the regular attendance area, so a Westdale address is a starting point, not a guarantee.
On the Catholic side, Canadian Martyrs names St. Mary Catholic Secondary School at 200 Whitney Avenue as the destination for most of its students, with Cathedral High School for those continuing in French Immersion. St. Mary enrols about 935 and rated 7.2 out of 10 in the 2025 Fraser report, 178th in Ontario. Cathedral, at about 1,650 students, rated 4.6 and ranked 591st.
Catchments and What They Mean for Prices
Westdale is one of the few Hamilton neighbourhoods where the schools affect the price directly. Across the west end deals we have worked, we typically see a 3 to 5 per cent premium for a home inside the Westdale catchment over an otherwise identical home just outside it. That is our team's observation, not a published statistic, and it is not fixed: it widens in a tight spring market and narrows when inventory builds.
Boundary streets are not printed here. Both boards redraw lines, immersion boundaries are separate from English-program boundaries, and IB has its own boundaries again. Any street we named today could be wrong by the time you read this.
How to Verify a Catchment Before You Buy
For public schools, go to HWDSB's Find My School page at hwdsb.on.ca/find-school, which the board describes as its School Locator. Enter the exact street address and it returns the designated schools for that home. Two cautions the board itself flags: French Immersion placement is guaranteed within the program but not necessarily at the closest neighbourhood school, and living in catchment gives no priority for the immersion class there. For Catholic schools, use the School Locator and Boundaries page under School Life at hwcdsb.ca. If a listing says great schools, take it as marketing until the board's own tool confirms it for that address.
Frequently asked questions
Can Chris check the schools for a specific house?
Yes. Send him the address and he will run it through both boards' locators and tell you what comes back, including the French Immersion picture.
Does Chris only work this area?
No. Chris works all of Hamilton, Burlington, and Oakville, and his son Michael covers Toronto at michaelouzas.com.
How do I get in touch?
Pick a time on the booking page and Chris will call you. It is free, and there is no pressure.
In short
Westdale earns much of its reputation. The pathway is clean, the high school holds both IB and secondary French Immersion in a board where only two schools hold either, and the Catholic feeder runs to a strongly rated secondary. The caveats are just as real: neither neighbourhood public elementary school is rated by the Fraser Institute, Dalewood's recent EQAO sits below the provincial figures, and none of the marquee programs come automatically with an address. Verify the address before you buy.
