Hamilton School Guide
Hamilton Centre Schools: Rankings, Catchments, and What Families Need to Know
By Chris Ouzas, Broker, Michael Ouzas Real Estate Team, Royal LePage Signature Realty. Last updated July 2026.
Key Takeaways
- The public elementary schools here split at Grade 5. Earl Kitchener and Central run JK to Grade 5, and Grades 6 to 8 are taught at a separate middle school.
- St. Joseph Catholic Elementary at 270 Locke Street South is the only school in this guide with a Fraser Institute rating: 6.7 out of 10 in the Report Card on Ontario's Elementary Schools 2025.
- HWDSB lists Earl Kitchener, Central, and Kanétskare as closed to out-of-catchment applications for 2026-27. For those three, admission depends entirely on the address.
- Both boards publish free address lookup tools. Run the exact address through HWDSB's Find My School and HWCDSB's School Locator before you buy.
This guide covers the schools in and around Durand, Kirkendall, and Locke Street, the three Lower City pockets most families mean when they say Hamilton Centre. It is a small, walkable area with a short school list, which makes it easier to research than the Mountain.
Where the numbers come from: Enrolment and EQAO figures are from the Ontario Ministry of Education's School Information Finder, preliminary 2024-25 data, which rounds enrolment to the nearest five. The ratings out of 10 are from the Fraser Institute's 2025 report cards, which are based on the 2023-24 school year.
Earl Kitchener Elementary School (JK-5)
Earl Kitchener sits at 300 Dundurn Street South, minutes from the Locke Street shops, and it is the school most Kirkendall buyers ask about first. It is a dual track HWDSB school running both the English program and French Immersion. The Ministry puts enrolment at about 540 and confirms JK to Grade 5, with 82 per cent of Grade 3 students at the provincial standard in reading, 77 per cent in writing, and 56 per cent in mathematics. The Fraser Institute does not rate it, because its elementary ranking needs both Grade 3 and Grade 6 results and this school stops at Grade 5. Note too that HWDSB's French Immersion procedure, updated September 2025, starts immersion in Grade 1 through a board-wide application that guarantees a place in the program but not at a specific school. Living beside Earl Kitchener does not guarantee a seat in its immersion track.
Central Elementary School (JK-5)
Central is at 75 Hunter Street West, in Durand and a short walk west of the Hunter Street GO station. The Ministry lists it as JK to Grade 5 with enrolment of about 320, one of the smaller schools in the area. Its Grade 3 results in the Ministry's data are 41 per cent at the provincial standard in reading, 35 per cent in writing, and 48 per cent in mathematics. Those sit below the other schools here. As with Earl Kitchener, the Fraser Institute does not rate Central, because there is no Grade 6 cohort.
Kanétskare Elementary School (Grades 6-8)
Kanétskare, at 222 Robinson Street, is the middle school in the pathway and the one buyers most often miss. The Ministry lists Grades 6 to 8 with enrolment of about 395, and Grade 6 results of 79 per cent at the provincial standard in reading, 80 per cent in writing, and 46 per cent in mathematics. The Fraser Institute does not rate it, since a Grades 6 to 8 school has no Grade 3 cohort. If the name is new to you, HWDSB trustees voted in June 2022 to rename the former Ryerson school, and Kanétskare comes from a Mohawk word for bay or inlet.
St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School (JK-8)
St. Joseph is at 270 Locke Street South, on the Locke strip itself, and it is a Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board school running all of JK to Grade 8 in one building. Enrolment is about 445. It earned 6.7 out of 10 in the Fraser Institute's Report Card on Ontario's Elementary Schools 2025, five year average 6.3, ranking 1,062 of 3,047 rated schools. Its Grade 6 results in the Ministry's data are strong: 94 per cent at the provincial standard in reading, 94 per cent in writing, and 65 per cent in mathematics, with Grade 3 at 76, 64, and 62 per cent. Because it is a Catholic board school, admission follows HWCDSB registration rules rather than a public catchment.
Secondary Schools Serving Hamilton Centre (Grades 9-12)
Secondary assignment here varies by address, so run the lookup. These are the schools in play. Westdale Secondary at 700 Main Street West is the closest HWDSB high school to Kirkendall and Locke, with enrolment of about 1,525. It scored 6.7 out of 10 in the Report Card on Ontario's Secondary Schools 2025, five year average 6.5, ranking 275 of 747 rated schools, and 88 per cent of its students passed the Grade 10 literacy test on their first attempt. Westdale is closed to out-of-catchment applications for 2026-27, which makes the address matter even more.
Downtown, the public high school is Bernie Custis Secondary at 1055 King Street East, which opened in September 2019 and took in the catchments of Sir John A. Macdonald and Delta secondary schools when those closed. Sir John A. Macdonald no longer appears in HWDSB's school directory, so if you are working from older advice, update it. Bernie Custis has enrolment of about 955 and scored 2.2 out of 10 in the 2025 Fraser secondary report card, ranked 725 of 747, with no five year average yet because the school is too new.
On the Catholic side, Cathedral High School at 30 Wentworth Street North has enrolment of about 1,650 and scored 4.6 out of 10, five year average 3.8, in the same Fraser report. St. Mary Catholic Secondary at 200 Whitney Avenue is the other HWCDSB option nearby. It scored 7.2 out of 10 in the same Fraser report, 178th in Ontario, with about 935 students.
Catchments and What They Mean for Prices
Hamilton Centre does not price on a single famous school line. These three pockets trade on housing stock, walkability, and proximity to the escarpment stairs and the Locke strip far more than on any one catchment. The school map affects the shortlist. Families who want Earl Kitchener, Central, or Kanétskare have to buy inside the catchment, because all three are closed to out-of-catchment applications for 2026-27. French Immersion narrows it again, since HWDSB draws immersion boundaries separately and allocates Grade 1 seats by random selection when a site is oversubscribed. Boundary streets are not listed here. The boards redraw them, and a line that is correct today can be wrong by the time you read this.
How to Verify a Catchment Before You Buy
For public schools, use HWDSB's Find My School page at hwdsb.on.ca/find-school, which hosts the board's School Locator. Enter the exact street address and it returns the designated schools for that home. Two things to know: the locator does not work on phones or tablets, and the board's help line is 905-527-5092. HWDSB also publishes an interactive school boundary map if you want to see the lines. For Catholic schools, use School Locator and Boundaries under School Life at hwcdsb.ca. A few cautions. HWDSB has boundary reviews running for the Waterdown and Binbrook areas right now, a reminder that boundaries move. Rules for students already enrolled when a boundary changes vary, so ask the board rather than assuming a child will be grandfathered. And if a listing says "great school district," take it as marketing. A listing agent's word is not verification. The board's own tool, run on the exact address, is.
Frequently asked questions
Can Chris check the schools for a specific house?
Yes. Send him the address and he will run it through both boards' locators and tell you what comes back, including the French Immersion picture.
Does Chris only work this area?
No. Chris works all of Hamilton, Burlington, and Oakville, and his son Michael covers Toronto at michaelouzas.com.
How do I get in touch?
Pick a time on the booking page and Chris will call you. It is free, and there is no pressure.
In short
Hamilton Centre has a short, legible school list: two JK to Grade 5 public schools feeding one middle school, one Catholic JK to Grade 8 school right on Locke, and high schools whose assignment depends entirely on the address. The best rated options are St. Joseph and Westdale, both at 6.7. The catch is that the three public schools most families want are closed to out-of-catchment applications, so the address determines which schools you get. Verify the address before you buy.
